The weekend is almost here! It looks like it is going to be cold and rainy, but that is no excuse not to workout. Pop in an old video and grab those leotards from your closet or checkout our class videos online at ActiveFlicks.com .
Super Vitamin D
New studies show that vitamin D is a key substance in fighting cancer. Cancer of the colon is one of the main cancers vitamin D helps, by destroying cancer cells that could be growing there. Breast and uterine cancer can also be prevented by the proper amount of D. Vitamin D lowers inflammations of the body which are what Alzheimer's, M.S. and Parkinson's are caused by. 70% of people diagnosed with Parkinson's have low levels of vitamin D. Some of the other things it is also good for is brain function, boosts thyroid, fibroimyalgia, muscle pain and fatigue.
Most of us do not get enough vitamin D. The main source is by the sun. People who live north of the southern states are at risk for not getting enough sun to process D in our bodies, especially in the winter months. Also people with dark skin do not get enough D from sun. Some food sources high in vitamin D are sun dried shitake mushrooms, milk, yogurt, cheese, salmon, tuna and mackerel. However, even including these foods in your diet, does not provide enough D. It is highly recommended you take a supplement of D3 in pill form found in the vitamin section in most stores and should be at least 1000 units per day. If you think your levels could be low right now, take 2000 units per day for a few months, until your levels are what they should be. Also, cod liver oil is a good source. A simple blood test done by your physician can tell what your level of D is.
If everyone in America had enough vitamin D, it would reduce deaths by 400,000 per year and medical costs by 40 to 50 billion per year. One pill every days costs you about 10 cents.

Dalynn Brickey
I have struggled
with weight issues most of my life. I have never really been into fitness and
never liked just "working out." I had been following a weight loss program for
some time and walking about three and a half miles. I came to a point that I
knew I needed to do something more than what I was doing. I also had been
struggling with neck and various pains for several years. After many discussions
with my husband, we had decided that we needed to join a gym or find a class or
something.
In January, we
found Guiding Fitness! And now (9 months later), I have to say that I love
working out! I never in my life thought I would ever say those words!! Thanks to
Guiding Fitness, between personal training sessions with Kacie and classes with
Kylie, they have something for everyone no matter what level you are at.
Everyone is very friendly and welcoming, it is very motivating and encouraging.
I am very happy to say that I rarely have neck pain now and I cannot believe the
things that I can now do, like jogging, jumping, burpees and even push ups. I
have lost 30 pounds and have never felt stronger in my
life!
Joe Brickey
I
was athletic from a very young age, I ran track, and was very active. This
continued on when I went into the military, but in 1992 I contracted a virus
that damaged my heart. It progressed into a condition that weakened my heart
down to two thirds of its normal strength and required me to take medications to
keep my heart from further deterioration.
I
have been struggling with weight partially due to medication over the years.
Dalynn and I participated mostly in aerobics but not any targeted core work.
After many years of failed weight loss,
misguided conditioning workouts, we came upon an ad
from Guiding Fitness. I worked with Ryan for two months of personal training and
was not only aware of strength that I haven’t had for years, but also the
flexibility and weight loss that wasn’t there before. After some time we went
into the Guide me program that further conditioned us. We are now in classes
with Kylie and what a treasure of motivation and knowhow. The value is
everything with what the staff taught us, how they motivate and most of all the
great relationships that we have with the staff and other clients at Guiding
Fitness.
My
doctor has advised me that my functionality of my heart has not improved and may
never improve, but it has strengthened my heart and the weight loss has delighted
my doctors. We feel Our choice of Guiding Fitness has brightened our futures.
Thanks Guys...
Before
After
Congratulations you two!!!

The Milk Myth
It is a flawed belief that protein and calcium from cows milk us
essential for our good health at any stage of our lives. In truth, many
studies have shown the consumption of milk is actually detrimental to
our health.
The myth that we need milk for calcium
has been disproved many times in many different studies. In a case
study of hip fractures, it was reported in the American Journal of
Epidemiology that "Consumption of dairy products, particularly at age 20
years, was associated with increased risk of hip fracture in old age."
In another 12 year long Harvard Nurses Health Study, they concluded
that those who relied on calcium from consumption of dairy foods broke
more bones than those who stayed away from most dairy. Vivian
Goldschmidt founder of Save Our Bones, also dispels the myth that drinking milk helps reduce bone fractures.
This
is a simple explanation of why milk depletes calcium, the opposite of
what the dairy industry claims. All animal protein acidifies the body's
natural PH, which triggers a biological correction. Calcium, being
the source of acid neutralizer, is taken from our bones to correct this
PH imbalance. Did you know that statistics show that countries with
lowest consumption of dairy products also have lowest incidence of bone
fractures and osteoporosis? Note that unsweetened fermented or cultured
dairy foods like yogurt or sour cream do not have the same negative
affect on our body's natural PH.
Mammal milk
is only meant to sustain life until the species is ready for solid food.
Humans are the only mammal that drink milk from another mammal and
drink milk all their lives. Every mammal produces milk specifically
designed for that species only. Dog milk is very different from milk of
a rat which is different from monkey milk, etc. Cow's milk is made for
a calf, not a baby human as they are quite different.
Now,
let's explore another factor in the cow's milk we drink that has
altered in the last 50 years. The latest high-tech product that is
suppose to stimulate cow milk production is bovine growth hormone (BGH).
Monsanto, BHG manufacturer, says it does not affect the meat or milk.
On the contrary, BGH molecules come out in the milk which presents
health risks in many forms, one of them being cancer. Some amounts of
BGH are also beginning to be explored as to why our children are
maturing at a much younger age then 50 years ago. It also makes cows
udders much larger than natural so a cow can produce more milk, which
makes for an extremely painful existence for her. Dairy products also
affect human milk. Lactating vegetarian mothers have 1/2 levels of
pesticides in their milk. There are many other side affects from
drinking cow milk, much too numerous to list here.
There
are several good choices in milk substitutes. Unsweetened almond milk
is very similar to cow milk in all it's uses. Pure coconut milk has 50%
more calcium than dairy milk, and non of the negative side effects.
There is also rice or soy milk. (I recommend organic soy milk)
For more information and easy to understand video, watch Dr. Hyman "Dairy: 6 Reasons You Should Avoid it at all Costs".
